Scarlett, the Chestnut T/B who was admitted into the Sanctuary last week after being found on the bridle path at Langdon Hills, has now had a couple of bouts of colic over the last 24 hours. Equine vet, Chloe Cummings, of Paton and Lee has attended both times to treat Scarlett. Thankfully, the abscess on her foot has cleared following daily pouticing and Chloe is also pleased that the swelling on the tendon injury has gone down. We have now managed to trace Scarlett back somewhat – she was born on 3 May 2004, making her 7 years old and not the 10 that we thought. Her original breeder has also been identified; that leaves us with the task now of trying to find her owner. In the meantime, Scarlett has settled down well to Sanctuary life and was allowed to be turned out on some grass today, which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Scarlett is stabled facing Vulkan – an ex-
The handsome Bam Bam is going on foster soon to one of our new Fostering Officers. In the meantime, he is having somewhat of a love affair with Welsh Section A Alicia. The pair adore each other. New Forest gelding, Aladdin, keeps trying to muscle in on the little lady, but Bam is having none of it and soon sees his rival off!
Grey Cob mare, Shauna, will be off to her lovely new foster home soon. This smashing little mare is a real happy hacker and has no vices – except that she is incredibly lazy in the school – hence her nickname “Yawny Shauny”!
We also recently waved Melissa off to her new foster home in Hertfordshire. Melissa
had been on foster for some years with one of our ex-
We are getting ready for the winter now by moving some of our excess horses onto the winter grazing site that Basildon Council have so kindly helped us out with. Field shelters are being repaired where necessary by our hardworking volunteers and we are also in the middle of worming – no mean feat with 70 odd horses and 3 staff to get through them all. But we plod on as always.
Scarlett
During the late afternoon of Monday, 11 October, we admitted a ten year old Chestnut
Thoroughbred Mare to the Sanctuary. She had been found by two ladies loose on the
bridle path at One Tree Hill, Corringham. Despite asking around the local yards,
no one claimed knowledge or ownership of the mare. She as very lame indeed, and
an examination revealed that she has an abscess in one foot, which we are poulticing
daily, a tendon sheath injury in the other foot, she has recently had ringworm and
there are a couple of small sarcoids on her front legs. We have named her Scarlett.
At the moment she is on medication and box rest and has settled in well. Other
than obviously being overdue for new shoes and a trim, Scarlett was otherwise in
good bodily condition. The Police and Horse Watch have been informed, as has the
Ranger for Langdon Hills Country Park, of Scarlett's whereabouts -
Her story was highlighted in the local press today (12 October) as being a "horse with cancer" . Scarlett is not "riddled with cancer" but simply has a couple of sarcoids which can more than likely be dealt with by our vets. What is causing us the most concern at the moment is her tendon injury. We shall, of course, keep you fully up to date with Scarlett's progress. Photos to follow in the next day or so.
SCARLETT UPDATE
Scarlett is extremely relaxed now that she is turned out with the herd. Her abscess has healed and her tendon injury has improved considerably.
Although Scarlett is micro-
Despite the three “terribles” i.e. Chestnut, Mare and Thoroughbred – Scarlett is a complete and utter darling. She is gentle, well mannered and very laid back.
BILLIE and GEORGIE
The Terrible Twins (not really, we love ‘em!) have come on in leaps and bounds. Initially
very nervous of human contact, both boys have responded well to our approach to their
rehabilitation. They are both easy to handle, head collar broken and – at last –
we can pick their feet up with ease – more importantly -
A TALE OF TWO PONIES
Our grateful thanks to Lynne Bush of Burches Riding Centre and Horse Trainer, Shelley Sales, for helping us out by taking Woody and Pipkin on for backing and schooling. We are currently unable to do the work ourselves, due to the fact that our school is in desperate need of refurbishment. Lynne and Shelley tell us they are both doing EHPPS proud with their good behaviour and are both top of the class in their lessons. Woody, who is one of the most laid back and slow ponies we’ve ever encountered has excelled himself – he leapt out of one field with minimal grazing, into the adjoining field, which had lush grazing and proceeded to run around like a bat out of hell. He was SO pleased with himself!

GRACE and RILEY
Grace and Riley joined us back on 11 May 2011 as wild ponies. They were very distrustful and wary of humans. Throughout the summer months our team have worked slowly and patiently with them to earn their trust. Although still nervous, they accepted their headcollars for the first time yesterday (25 October 2011). This morning both were happy to be led out for some grass (the few strands that are available!) and were quite relaxed. This afternoon, Grace and Riley were led out yet again for a walk with grooms, Sarah Mills and Helen Hopkins. They both accepted being groomed and having their eyes cleaned – progress indeed. It seems to have taken so long to get to this stage, but it has been worth the wait, because had we pushed them too quickly, too early, we would have lost a lot of this natural trust that we have instilled in them.
CHARITY HALLOWEEN DISCO
FRIDAY, 28 OCTOBER 2011
Wow! What a fabulous turnout we had. Everyone made such an effort with their costumes too.
On behalf of our gorgeous horses and ponies, we thank everyone who supported the event. Very special thanks indeed to Steve Ripo, owner of The Anchor Public House in Benfleet, who kindly let us hold the event at The Moorings completely free of charge. The superstar of the night was, without doubt, the lovely Roy Logan, of Technicolor Dreams who DJ’d for us – again, completely free of charge. For those of us stuck in a 70’s timewarp (when pop music was undoubtedly at its best!) – we were in Heaven dancing to all the old favourites.
The evening made a profit of £668 – all which, as ever, will be spent on the direct care of our animals.
Here are just a small selection of the photos taken on the night – we think our Secretary, Treena King, was, without a shadow of a doubt, the scariest of all on the night (LOL!).
