SHAKIRA EHPPS
FEBRUARY 2012 - HORSE OF THE MONTH

Shakira is a 14.2hh Grey Arab Mare who was born in 1998.  Her owner was a very prominent and wealthy businessman who was internationally famous.  One of his hobbies was his Arab studfarm.  When he passed away after a long illness, his Executors totally neglected all the horses.  Around 30 horses were left in one huge barn to slowly starve to death.  Eventually, the matter came to the attention of a local RSPCA Inspector who was sickened by the sight that met him when he paid a visit.

Over half of the horses had died and were infested with maggots who had started to eat the corpses.  Those who had managed to survive were skeletal.

The RSPCA approached several equine welfare centres around the country, which resulted in three of the survivors being signed over into the care of EHPPS.

Shakira was just a two year old filly when she arrived at the Sanctuary, together with Lawrence and Moloco.   They were in all an appalling condition – malnourished and with heavy worm burdens.  All three were extremely nervous initially on arrival here, but Shakira more so than the other two.  Shakira has weak back muscles and cannot be ridden.

Shakira can be a little highly strung at times, but for all that, she is a really loving horse once she gets to know you.
