SANCTUARY DIARY - JULY 2010 ~~

Cherokee fancies
himself as a footballer - must have been all that hoo haa about the World
Cup that got him going. He had a bit of a kick around with Groom,
Mike, yesterday and even managed to score a goal (mum, Poppy, who was
goalkeeper, managed to let the ball slip the net!)
We've got quite a
lot of injuries and sickies at the moment - Chilli has pulled a muscle,
nothing too serious, and is on stable rest, Silver has damaged a tendon
and is on restricted stable rest. She has also developed some
melanomas on the side of her head in more or less the same position as
Lana's. Shane's hock keeps swelling up and may need surgery,
Louis Springer has got a bog spavin (at the tender age of two years), Marc
has pulled a muscle, Lawrence had a small sarcoid on the side of his face
some months back which was lasered off by the Animal Health Trust.
Sadly, this has grown back with avengence and is very aggresssive.
We are hoping the special cream from the University of Liverpool will help
to either clear the growth or, at least, slow it down. Obviously we
are watching it carefully. Vulkan has needed some specialised
farriery for his feet which are still not in a particularly good state.

Remember
- we have another Horse Show on 8 August - so bring your horse along and
support us on the day - non-horse owners are also very welcome to join
us. Look forward to seeing you all. |

Lottery Winner,
Dorothy King, donated all her winning straight back to the horses, and
long term supporter, Ivy Finnecy, sent us a £30 donation. Bless
them both.
Cherokee continues
to grow... and grow... and grow... Laura found him the other morning
running with the herd(!) He had managed to break down the fencing
from his and Poppy's paddock onto the turnout field in the early hours of
the morning, and paired himself up with 16.3hh Vulkan and 14.2hh Zuli!
He was just TWO WEEKS OLD at the time! We have now put him and mum
in our large Sunday field, along with three year old Elijah, who we think
may be another of Poppy's offspring, together with Arabs Moloco and
Lawrence, who are both under veterinary care at the moment and therefore
not running with the herd.

|
| It's
so sweet to watch Cherokee being fussed over by Mo and Lawrence who seemed
to have become the godparents in this case! It gives Poppy some time
out to relax on her own when these two kindly take care of him.
Having said that Poppy is never too far away from her baby. We can't
believe how forward this little lad is. He now has four front teeth,
is frightened of no-one and nothing and is not backward in coming forwards
if he wants something.
Laura, our Head
Groom, can always be relied upon to make us laugh (and it really is
unintentionally most of the time!) The other morning Laura went out
to do a herd check, which is done morning and afternoon every day.
As she got into the back fields, she noticed that Grey Welsh Pony Minnie
was very lame. Minnie needed to be brought down onto the yard to be
stabled so that we could get our vet to attend to her, but Laura was head
collar less at the time. Ever resourceful, she whipped off her bra
(YES HONESTLY!) adjusted it to fit on Minnie's head as a makeshift
headcollar and proceeded to lead her down the fields. Laura told us
that even some of the herd did a double take when they saw the pair of
them. (Minnie Right) |

No
dramas at the Sanctuary as at today - foalie Cherokee is thriving well and
seems ever bigger today than yesterday!
We
received a lovely email today from Sugar's foster mum Katie Furlong which
we thought we'd share with you. It really does lift our spirits when
we see how well our fostered horses and ponies look - most have been
rescued from a life of hell - Sugar and her filly foal, Mia, and companion
Chico, certainly were. All three are in fantastic foster homes
now. Here's Katie's message ......
I hope you’re
all well there & not keeping too busy! Just thought you
might like to see a couple of recent photos of Sugar. She’s a fantastic
lead rein pony, as well as having a heart of gold when Ashley’s on the
ground handling her. They went to their first gymkhana on Sunday, and they
came 4th out of 6 in the lead rein section (pretty good going
as Ashley is only just 3, and all but 1 of the other children were much
older). Please excuse Sugar’s coat, she seems to be loosing her winter
coat in sections, so it looks a bit strange as she still has a very hairy
tummy. I’m sure she will have a full summer coat just before the weather
turns and she needs to grow another winter one!
Best wishes
Katie |
