SANCTUARY DIARY - APRIL 2010 ~~

We've
heard already from Lottie's new foster family that she had settled in well
and her young jockey is really enjoying hacking her out. The pair
seem to have bonded well.
We've
had two new residents join us today - ANNIE a 6 year old Dark Grey
Shetland Mare, and POLLY, a 6 year old Dark Bay Cob mare. Both have
been checked over by our vet today and despite having vastly overgrown
feet and lice, they are not too badly off compared to some of the cases we
admit. As with all new arrivals here, Annie and Polly will be
microchipped, passported, wormed, blood tests, be attended by our farrier,
have flu/tet started and will be having a dental check too. We'll
let you know how they are getting on.

| Laura
has a ride of Blaze today who has been renamed "Lazy Blazey" as
she really wasn't impressed that she was being asked to do a little
work. It was a funny sight of Sue Allery leading Blaze around the
field on a lead rope with Laura firmly planted on her back! Rocky is
coming along really well too and is enjoying being walked in hand with his
fosterer, Ben Cripps. We just had to get a photo of our
Cheryl-the-Peril on Danny, who she has fostered from us for around nine
years now. |

homes have been found this week for RAINBOW, RAJAH, NOAH and SHAUNA, as
well as ELLIE and WIZARD. We wish them all the best of luck and lots
of happiness with their new families.
We currently have
a couple of rideable horses available who will need schooling on, so
experienced applicants only please. There are also a couple of
lovely little lead rein ponies seeking new young riders. Further
information available from Sue Allery on 07515 565089. |

Lottie
went off the this week to join her new foster family - let's hope they
have a long and happy life together. Our fostering is still going
really well at the moment. We are getting a lot of applicants from
south of the river this year, and have already placed quite a few of our
horses in foster homes in Kent.
We
had two new arrivals today - Blue and her day old colt foal, Mannie.
While her owner was recovering from an illness, he had a friend looking
after his mare for him. He was horrified when he got her back a few
days ago to find her totally emaciated. Her colt foal was born
yesterday morning, but Blue had no milk to give him at all. The
gentleman called his vet out who did what they could, but the gentleman
was still trying to make a full recovery and was in no fit state to care
for a sickly foal. He asked for our help. Mannie was signed
over into our ownership, and Blue will be staying with us to see if we can
get her back to health. At the moment, our vets are very concerned
at her poor condition. She is so weak that she is barely able to
stand.
On
arrival at the Sanctuary at mid-day today, the pair were immediately put
nto our large foaling box, where we had laid a thick straw
bed. Mannie was so cold and dehydrated, that we covered him
with a double duvet to keep him warm. He quickly guzzled some warm
mare's milk replacement and fell into an exhausted sleep. Bue was
very dull and depressed and griding her teeth in pain. One of our
vets attended and administered some pain killers and anti inflammatories
to Blue to help make her more comfortable. The foal - although
still weak - is taking regular milk feeds and we are hopeful that he will
go on to make a recovery. Mannie also had a glucose transfusion this
evening to help him. The vet will be back tomorrow to carry out a
plasma transfusion to ensure that Mannie receives the vital colostrum that
he is currently lacking.
One
of our lovely ex-grooms, Michael Pugh, has recently rejoined our fold,
having been working out of the County for the last couple of years.
Mike has a wealth of experience in helping to hand rear orphaned and
sickly foals, so we gratefully accepted his offer tonight of doing
"mare and foal duty" so that the staff could get some much
needed shut eye ready for tomorrow's onslaught. Welcome home Mikey!
